2010年8月7日夜至8日凌晨，甘肃甘南藏族自治州舟曲县突发特大山洪泥石流灾害，造成重大人员伤亡。为表达全国各族人民对甘肃舟曲特大山洪泥石流遇难同胞的深切哀悼，国务院决定15日举行全国哀悼活动，全国和驻外使领馆下半旗志哀，停止公共娱乐活动。
随着舟曲灾区供水、电力、通讯、交通的基本恢复正常，灾区民众的生活已经得到了保障，抢险救灾的重点将转向安置工作。与此同时，舟曲灾区灾后恢复重建工作也已全面启动。在供水方面，县城已基本解决应急供水问题。在供电方面，通过电力部门组织人员抢修，县城57个变压器已修复32个，县城重点区域供电基本恢复。在道路方面，县城东西出口通道基本打通，有效保障了抢险救灾物资的运送。在通讯方面，县城10个移动通信基站全部开通，通信容量达到灾前的5倍，通信保持畅通。
根据安排，舟曲灾区的受灾民众安置和补助工作将分三个阶段进行。据悉，在应急安置阶段，当地政府统一安排食品、衣被等，受灾群众每人按150元发放生活补助资金，时限为15天。在过渡期安置阶段，将鼓励和引导受灾群众分散安置。在入住安置期，当地部门将争取今年入冬前，最迟到明年6月份完成倒塌房屋恢复重建；损坏房屋今年11月底前全部修复。舟曲特大山洪泥石流地质灾害发生后，社会各界积极踊跃捐款捐物，支援灾区抢险救灾。截至8月13日15时，甘肃省民政厅救灾捐赠专户已接收捐赠款物总价值12038.99万元。
